Beneath the Surface: A Studio Dialogue with Holly Hendry

Step inside Holly Hendry's studio to explore sculpture as a way of revealing the hidden systems that shape our bodies, buildings and everyday lives.

Join Sculpture Network coordinator Sinéad McCarthy for a studio visit and conversation with sculptor Holly Hendry, whose playful yet thought-provoking sculptures reveal the hidden structures that exist beneath the surfaces of our bodies, buildings and urban environments.

Working across sculpture, installation and casting, Hendry transforms industrial and everyday materials, including steel, Jesmonite, silicone, glass, soap and marble, into works that blur the boundaries between anatomy, architecture and infrastructure. Her research-led practice often draws on collaborations with scientists and explores themes of material reuse, bodily systems and the unseen networks that connect us.

The morning will begin with an introduction to Hendry's practice, followed by a conversation about her approach to making, research and material experimentation. Participants will then have the opportunity to ask questions before taking part in a facilitated group discussion reflecting on the ideas raised during the visit. This intimate Dialogue event offers a rare chance to encounter the artist's working environment and gain insight into the thinking behind one of Britain's most exciting contemporary sculptural practices.
