Third WOLF-WERK Sculpture Symposium

Contemporary sculpture in Darmstadt (DE)

Sculptors Julie Mia (DE), Christina Sporrong (SE) and Jörg Bach (DE) interpret the myth of Sisyphus with the material steel

From 10 to 17 May 2025, artists Julie Mia, Christina Sporrong and Jörg Bach will meet for the third biennial WOLF-WERK Sculpture Symposium in the historic Halle 109 in Darmstadt. Together with the initiator and steel sculptor Georg-Friedrich Wolf, they are artistically exploring the theme of "SISYPHOS - the indefatigable ’ - both in terms of content and form, with steel as the central medium.

The myth of Sisyphus is generally regarded as a curse, symbolising an endlessly recurring, seemingly pointless activity. However, in his essay "The Myth of Sisyphus ’ (1942), Albert Camus interpreted it as an expression of the human condition: man lives in the field of tension between the meaninglessness of the world and his longing for meaning. According to Camus, the possibility of personal freedom and self-realisation lies in the conscious acceptance of the absurd.

‘We must imagine Sisyphus as a happy man.’
(Camus, 2004, p. 159f. )

The WOLF-WERK Symposium 2025 picks up on this idea. In a collaborative working process, the invited artists will develop their individual positions on the topic - accompanied by an open dialogue and mutual inspiration.

The participants were selected by a renowned jury: Anne Berk (curator and chair of the European Sculpture Network), Ludwig Seyfarth (curator, KAI 10 | Arthena Foundation) and Georg-Friedrich Wolf as organiser.

Interested visitors are cordially invited to experience the creation process of the sculptures live from Wednesday 14 May from 5 to 7 pm.

The event will conclude with a public exhibition on Saturday 17 May. As part of the vernissage (time to follow), the works created can be viewed and discussed in depth in an artist talk moderated by Claudia Olbrych (Head of Kunst Archiv Darmstadt e.V.).

The WOLF-WERK Sculpture Symposium 2025 is a cooperation with the European sculptors' association Sculpture Network and is organised by Anemone Vostell - Koordinator for Berlin and Germany North-East as well as cultural manager and founder of BAM! Berlin Art Management.
