Measure for Measure

assemblage with carved salvaged Huon pine, wax, fabric, string wound on dowel, antique plumb-bob, vintage steel railway callipers and U-bracket

The title of the sculpture is a play on Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. The assemblage is inspired by the beautiful design of age-old measuring tools and the skills of the manual worker that are being replaced by modern technology. The carved hand and forearm dressed in a check shirtsleeve emerge from vintage industrial callipers and hold an antique plumb-bob. My husband modelled for the carving of the hand. Huon pine has very close growth rings that mimic fingerprints.
