She's A Cosmic Gaia

In She’s a Cosmic Gaia, the female figure is imagined as part of a larger living and cosmic order. The work reflects on belonging, rootedness, and the deep interconnection between body, earth, life, and universe.

In She’s a Cosmic Gaia, the figure appears to dissolve into a mycelium-like structure. Mycelium, the living and expanding part of a fungus, forms networks of fine, branching threads, often invisible to the naked eye. These networks connect with other plants and support systems of growth, exchange, and interdependence.

Van den Berg uses this structure as a metaphor for belonging and ecological connection. The figure is not isolated, but intertwined with the earth and rooted in a larger living system. She appears held by this network: connected, supported, and at peace.
