Originally created as a study of the work sculpted by Michelangelo for the tomb of Pope Julius II, entitled the Rebellious Captive, this sculpture took on a specific meaning as it transformed into a part of the ReThink Collection.
This work serves as a declaration condemning sexual discrimination and the outdated moral values of both the ancient society of the fourteenth century as well as our society today. Portraying the rebellious energy apparent in the work towards criticism of an intolerant society and in support of anti-discriminatory protections for LGBTQ+ communities.

Free Sex was was begun in the “Souvenir Series”, which consisted a group of artworks created as a reaction to a certain criteria as defined by some theories, where prohibited principles become the commanding prerequisite. In good fun, this work began with the crime of theft, as a pirated image of a well known Renascence work.

Yet, the work took on meaning as a part of ReThink Collection through the model, and the process of creating in clay.  As I began to learn of the discrimination suffered by members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The rebellious energy is apparent in the pose chosen for the Captive, as he turns towards an intolerant society.  With his hands restrained behind his back and attached to a strap surrounding his chest denying him the oxygen required for freedom.

During the time of the original sculpture’s conception in the fourteen hundreds, this may have represented, not only a comment on slavery or class but also condemning sexual discrimination.
