Baum zur Guten Hoffnung [Tree of Hope]

Online art project

In every tree, there are replicas of pregnant bellies hanging. When pictured from afar, these objects resemble colorful balloons, announcing a cheerful celebration. Upon closer examination, however, the bellies evoke a more somber mood: as it turns out, they are empty.

The simultaneous awareness of one's own immense creative power and the distinct feeling of a lack of control may be particularly acute in a person who is pregnant. But the coexistence of these  seemingly contradictory feelings are a quintessential human experience.

Thus, in my understanding, hope is entirely compatible with intense feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. This sentiment is expressed in a condensed manner in the following quote that is sometimes attributed to Martin Luther: "Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree today".
