Herbert Nouwens

FUGA

In 1994 Nouwens made a large transparent sculpture for a tax building in Amersfoort, commissioned by the Government Buildings Agency.

In 2019 the sculpture was moved to IJmuiden, a city that is relevant to the sculpture, because IJmuiden is the city of steel and shipping (and fishing).
The sculpture now stands proudly opposite a major steel producer, Tata Steel, along the North Sea Canal.
And it is made from pieces of ships that once sailed through that same canal to a shipyard in Amsterdam for repair. Nouwens bought the 'wreck pieces' and turned them into a 16 meter high sculpture.

Nouwens considers it a Monument to the Sea. It is also close to the new sea locks that protect the Netherlands from the water.
