Susanne Specht

Stone was and is the starting point of her oeuvre, which has grown over three decades. It is a manifestation of time and perseverance - in the small-format fieldstones as well as in the huge granite and marble blocks. For Susanne Specht, however, stone as a material also means limitation. It is not possible to work against its ‘grown’ layers and structures. The idea lies in the stone. The theme of these sculptures is to track these down, to reveal or emphasise them, to be guided by the material, not least to follow the geometric or architectural vocabulary discovered there - inside. The sculptor returns again and again to stone, in particular to the eclogites (ekloges, Greek for exquisite stone), which she finds in Franconia as outwardly completely unremarkable blanks. Never finished, characterised by permanence, the examination and questioning of the stone forms the core of her work.
Susanne Specht's work is characterised by multidimensionality in every respect. It opens up to the viewer, involves him or her, sets visual impulses, shows perspectives from within and at the same time points the way outwards. The works manifest possibilities in time and space.
