I have been based in London since leaving college. I create abstract sculpture with a long-term, immersive engagement with materials. I studied sculpture at Wimbledon School of Art (1978-82) under Glyn Williams, Katherine Gilli and Robin Greenwood, and went on to the Advanced Course at St. Martin’s School of Art to study with Tim Scott and Alan Gouk (1982-84). There was a strong figurative reference to my student training and I continued my preoccupation with the figure after leaving college, but over time I moved away from anatomy towards full abstraction, but movement and gesture are still central concerns. I am currently based in Stratford east London. I am an active member of the Royal Society of Sculptors (elected 2000 and a trustee 2016-2019), and The London Group (elected in 2018). In 2019 I brought together three other sculptors to exhibit together and to make a series of recorded discussions. ‘Talking-Sculpture-Making’ has now had several exhibitions including an exhibition and symposium at York St John University with Griselda Pollock as keynote speaker. Most recently, Natalie Rudd wrote the catalogue essay and chaired a panel discussion at our show in Hypha studios, Stratford London. I have been an invited artist at sculpture symposia in Andres Institute, New Hampshire, the Contemporary Arts International in Massachusetts and the Anguilla Stone symposium. I completed a stone carving at each one within the time allocated. Prestigious juried exhibitions and prizes including the Ashurst Sculpture Prize in 2021, Cork Street Open, RA summer show.
