Toma Gabor

Creative statement Toma’s practice and studio explorations are focused on three-dimensional site-specific sculpture, installation, painting, and drawing. He uses both conventional and unconventional materials, and through modeling or combining them, he strives to either enhance or diminish their characteristics. This approach allows him to suggest ideas in abstract shapes. The works on display suggest changing shapes; they vary from compact, geometrical, or rough organic volumes, to thin, aerated traces in space. His works has explored many themes, such as consumerism and human behavior. Shoppers I-II-III, The Network, The Temporary Monument of the Passerby, and Mass-produced, were all designed to attract the passerby’s instant involvement and response. In his new works, the cuboid-like shape is a modified Platonic volume, becomes a module in an architectural structure or a setting that can be hidden or visible. Inspired by the traces of old buildings one might find in an ancient place, the installation calls to mind how these crumbling individual components now only serve as silent witnesses. However, at one time may have been the key element of a wall, or ceiling, etc. Regardless of their prior functionality, the aesthetic potential overrides the previous story. The public artworks proposed either in the gallery set up or outdoor are for temporary or permanent display, mainly experimental interaction with the passersby and spaces, which are meant to personalize the space and interact with the viewer.

What shall we eat tonight?
People concern the natural catastrophe, when they see them on a television. However, their concern will be declined as the news ends and then it will be replaced with their daily life. “OK, now switch off the television, everyone! Time for a dinner! What shall we eat tonight?” “hmm..What shall I wear for the party tomorrow?” People feel our planet became warmer. However climate change progress little by little and people has an ability to adopt them into new temperature. But when they aware of the impact not on television but in front of them, it will be too late and adopting into new temperature is not endless. It is not necessary to threat people every day by showing problems, but it is also meaningful time to time to bring the issues to concern.

COMO TÚ (de León Felipe) Así es mi vida, piedra, como tú. Como tú, piedra pequeña, como tú piedra ligera; como tú, canto que ruedas por las calzadas y por las veredas; como tú, guijarro humilde de las carreteras; como tú, que en días de tormenta te hundes en el cieno de la tierra y luego centelleas bajo los cascos y bajo las ruedas; como tú, que no has servido para ser ni piedra, ni de una lonja, ni piedra de una audiencia, ni piedra de un palacio, ni piedra de una iglesia; como tú, piedra aventurera; como tú, que tal vez estás hecha solo para una honda, piedra pequeña y ligera…… Todas estas piedras están dedicadas a los fracasados, desahuciados, perdedores, derrotados,…. quizás yo mismo. Cuando salimos al campo solo las miramos para no tropezarnos o evitar un traspiés. Ahí se quedan, tiradas en el camino. Sólo son estorbos. Angel.
