ARTIST IN RESIDENCE – ITALY

Deadline: July 15, 2024

The French Academy in Rome welcomes artists, authors and researchers from all disciplines all year round to carry out a specific creative or research project as part of the “Medici Residences” program. These residences are not subject to the annual resident competition. These are short-term residency stays, aimed at carrying out a specific research or creative project. The next call concerns residencies for the first half of 2025, from 2 weeks to 2 months, from January to June 2025.

Applications can be submitted for all disciplines of creation, artistic professions, as well as for the history and theory of the arts, the restoration of works of art or monuments. Applicants must be French-speaking.

As of the application deadline, applicants must be over eighteen years of age. Collective applications are permitted. Applications are examined during one or two sessions per year.

The jury responsible for examining the applications is chaired by the director of the Academy and includes two qualified personalities appointed each year by him. At the end of the examination of the application files, the jury deliberates and decides on the list of selected applications, as well as the duration of the residency allocated to them. Successful candidates will receive a response by email within three months of the closing of the call for applications.

HOW TO APPLY:

- The electronic weight of the dematerialized application file must not exceed 20 MB in total, and the number of documents posted on the platform must not exceed 4 units.

- the application form duly completed on the dematerialized platform, indicating in particular the desired duration;

- a double-sided copy of the national identity card or passport, valid and in PDF format, of all candidates;

- a detailed curriculum vitae (CV) or biography, in French, describing the artistic career, the diplomas, prizes and scholarships obtained, the publications and residencies completed (one CV or biography per person for collective projects), in PDF format;

- a note of intent in the form of a typed note, written in French in PDF format, not exceeding 3 pages, A4 and 2 MB specifying the motivations, the research theme(s) and the nature work planned during the residency period;

- the file may also include elements of additional documentation: copies of articles, extracts from memoirs, photographs or images of documentation (15 images maximum). It is also possible to insert hypertext links to video, audio files or internet pages. All of these elements must be assembled into a single PDF document.

- the file must be accompanied by a single letter of recommendation supporting the research and/or creation project from a cultural actor (for example: publishing house, producer, gallery, museum, art center contemporary, festival, archives, research center, etc.).

Reception conditions at the Villa Médicis:

The dates of residents’ actual stay are set by the director of the Academy. If the successful candidate refuses these dates, he or she may lose the benefit of residency. Between these dates, residents must ensure an effective presence at Villa Médicis.

The terms of reception in residence are set by a residence contract concluded between the Academy and the resident.

For the exercise of their creative, research or experimental activity, a residency grant of a monthly amount of €1,500 gross is paid by the Academy to each resident in proportion to the residency.

A single room in shared accommodation is offered to each resident for the duration of their stay. Return transportation is the responsibility of the resident.
