Afrika Museum

A museum about people

The Africa Museum in Berg en Dal ( near Nijmegen ) is dedicated to art from and cultures of the continent of Africa. The museum, founded in 1954, started as a Mission Museum of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. The fathers of this order collected African objects to learn more about African religions.

In the course of the 20ste The museum has broadened its horizons for a century and shows contemporary African art in addition to religious and traditional objects. In the Africa museum you will discover that we are all the same except for the differences: human.

The Africa Museum is located in the wooded and hilly area of Berg en Dal, near Nijmegen. In addition to regularly changing exhibitions, the museum shows how we are connected to the continent of Africa through personal stories, unique objects and contemporary art. Outside, in the museum park, visitors are introduced to the traditional architecture of peoples from Ghana, Lesotho and Mali.  The Museumpark is also the location for the Africa Now Festival and the Keti Koti Festival.

The Africa Museum - together with the Tropenmuseum and Museum Volkenkunde - forms the National Museum of World Cultures.
