From Berlin to Lusatia: Iron Cast, the Biennale, and Rohkunstbau exhibition

Discover the diversity of contemporary art in southern Brandenburg: Explore the cradle of iron casting in Lauchhammer, dine in the orangery of the Baroque Altdöbern Palace, and immerse yourself in the art of crossing boundaries!

On the last day of Berlin Art Week 2026, we’ll take the 8 a.m. train from Berlin Ostkreuz to Senftenberg, where we’ll transfer to a bus that will take us through the surreal landscape of the former open-pit mine to Lauchhammer, the cradle of artistic iron casting.

There, the Engelmann brothers will guide us through the historic Lauchhammer Art and Bell Foundry. Afterward, accompanied by curator Antje Bräuer, we’ll visit the exhibition storage facility of the Lauchhammer Art Casting Museum with its unique collection of around 2,800 models. The museum is part of the 1st Open Art Lausitz Biennale, during which Lower Lusatia and the city of Cottbus are transformed into a stage for contemporary art.

Afterward, we’ll carpool (or take a taxi) to Altdöbern, 35 km away, for the 31st ROHKUNSTBAU exhibition in the town’s Baroque castle. Lunch will be served in the Orangery, where we can recharge our batteries. There will also be time to visit the SN showroom, where we can exchange ideas with one another.

After a short walk through the palace grounds, we will be welcomed at 3:00 p.m. by Inka Thunecke, a board member of the “Friends of Rohkunstbau” association, who will introduce us to the history of ROHKUNSTBAU. Curator Christoph Tannert will then guide us through “The Art of Going Beyond,” the title of this year’s exhibition.
