As a long-time and passionate member of Sculpture Network, Marvin was renowned not only for his extraordinary creative output but also for his active participation in many of the association's events. His loss is deeply felt within the artistic community, sparking numerous heartfelt tributes, including a recent homage exhibition in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain titled RETURN.

A Sculptor of Vision and Humanity

Marvin Liberman鈥檚 sculptures stood out for their ability to merge the abstract with the tangible, using form and texture to evoke deep emotions and resonate with universal human experiences. His work often blended natural materials with modern elements, creating pieces that were both timeless and rooted in the present. Each of his sculptures became more than an object鈥攖hey were contemplative explorations of existence, memory, and connection.

Liberman鈥檚 artistry uniquely captured the essence of collective experiences while also addressing very personal and intimate emotions. His work invited viewers to engage with it on multiple levels, making his pieces not only visually striking but also emotionally stirring.

The RETURN Exhibition: A Fitting Tribute

In honour of Marvin Liberman's life and artistic legacy, the sculpture association M铆nimo Tama帽o Grande organized a moving tribute exhibition titled RETURN, hosted at the Casa de Cultura of the San Lorenzo de El Escorial Town Hall in Madrid. Running until September 6th, the exhibition prominently featured two of Marvin鈥檚 large-scale works in the exhibition hall, a powerful testament to his profound understanding of space and materiality. Additionally, his pieces were displayed in a beautiful courtyard, allowing his sculptures to interact harmoniously with their surroundings, an effect Liberman often strove to achieve in his works.

The exhibition鈥檚 inauguration by Mayor Carlota L贸pez Esteban, accompanied by M铆nimo Tama帽o Grande President Angel Fl贸rez-Estrada, was a heartfelt tribute to Marvin鈥檚 artistic heritage. The strong attendance of fellow sculptors and art enthusiasts alike spoke volumes about the deep respect and admiration Marvin inspired throughout the artistic community. The show, coordinated by Patricia Larrea and Cecilia Liao, has garnered significant attention from local media. Following its conclusion in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the exhibition will travel to the Pizarro Foundation in Trujillo and later to Huelva, continuing to honour Marvin鈥檚 enduring legacy.

Marvin Liberman's Journey

Marvin Liberman was born in the United States but resided in Madrid, Spain, at the time of his passing. His artistic journey took him across continents and cultures. For over 20 years, Marvin lived first in La Paz, Bolivia, and then in Madrid, cultivating his artistic voice and deepening his practice.

His art education began at the young age of 15 and was enriched by studies at various institutions. He also spent two significant periods as an apprentice in the studios of a Serbian and an Italian sculptor, learning not only technique but also the nuances of creative expression.

Marvin鈥檚 career evolved through two distinct periods. His earlier work focused on figurative sculpture and drawing, while his later work embraced abstraction, utilizing tarlatan gauze鈥攁 material he cherished for its subtle, fragile, and ephemeral qualities. As his practice evolved, tree branches became an essential element, playing a key role in his work鈥檚 organic forms and delicate balance.

A Legacy That Lives On

Marvin鈥檚 art held a unique capacity to spark reflection and dialogue on universal themes鈥攎emory, ritual, and the human condition. His participation in Sculpture Network鈥檚 Online Club in May 2022, titled Memorial Sculpture and Collective Rituals, exemplified his engagement with these themes. During this event, Marvin explored how sculpture can serve as a medium for collective remembrance and healing. His profound insights and artistic contributions left a lasting impression on both his peers and those fortunate enough to engage with his work.

As we reflect on Marvin鈥檚 life, we are reminded of the enduring power of sculpture to transcend time, place, and even death itself. Marvin鈥檚 works will continue to inspire contemplation and provoke thought, serving as a testament to the transformative power of art to connect us to one another on a deeper level.
