The Perpetuum

The Perpetuum reflects on parenthood as an evolving relation of care, dependence, growth, and separation. Through this relation, the work connects human life, nature, and family across generations.

The Perpetuum presents two upward-reaching forms with differently sized feet, suggesting the presence of a parent and child. From these bases, small tree-like and branched shapes emerge, connecting the body to organic growth and transformation.

The work reflects Van den Berg’s ongoing interest in how bodies merge with organic extensions. This transition becomes a way to articulate the shifting balance between dependence, guidance, and emerging autonomy. Rather than illustrating a fixed narrative, the sculpture approaches the parent-child relation as an evolving structure shaped by growth and divergence.

Through its vertical movement and intertwined forms, The Perpetuum positions motherhood as a dynamic state in which support and separation coexist.
