The Agony of Christ offers a moral dimension to the idea of Christ’s suffering that is complicated by gender and fails as a devotional image, yet it pulls the viewer into the narrative and at the same time is neither consolatory nor comforting.
The figure appears to be struggling for her last breath, as she pushes up with one foot to fill her lungs, this image offers death without purpose or consequence, only a despondent figure alluding to a desperate failing. This work turns the idea of resurrection around portraying suffering without redemption and death without renewal or absolution.
