About Richard Serra

Richard Serra, an influential American sculptor, was born in 1938 in San Francisco and passed away last March. Renowned for his monumental steel sculptures, Serra's work explored the complex relationship between space, form, and viewer interaction. He initially studied English literature before embracing art, quickly gaining fame in the 1960s and 1970s for his innovative use of industrial materials. His pieces often challenge conventional notions of sculpture, inviting viewers to engage physically with his massive, minimalist works. Serra's legacy includes iconic works like "Tilted Arc," a controversial public sculpture in New York City, and the "Torqued Ellipses" series. His art continues to influence contemporary artists and architects, celebrated for its bold exploration of space and form.

A special thank you to the Staff Foundation.
