Dialogue during BERLIN ART WEEK 2024

Andreas Mühe. Bunker – Real Historical Space

Let the artist Andreas Mühe personally guide you through the exhibition Bunker - Real Space of History at Kunsthaus Dahlem, preceded by a visit to the renowned BASTIAN Gallery in its exhibition space designed by John Pawson in Berlin-Dahlem.

On the occasion of BERLIN ART WEEK 2024, we are visiting Galerie BASTIAN, whose international reputation is based on the presentation of remarkable works from the modern, post-war and contemporary periods. The exhibition programme focuses on artists such as Pablo Picasso and Emil Nolde as well as German and American artists of post-war modernism such as Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol.

Accompanying his exhibition ‘Bunker - Real Space of History’ in the neighbouring Kunsthaus Dahlem, - the former state studio of Arno Breker, the most prominent sculptor in National Socialist Germany - BASTIAN is showing selected works by the artist Andreas Mühe, who is known for his precisely constructed photographs.

Inspired by the ‘bunker archaeology’ of French cultural philosopher Paul Virillo, Andreas Mühe traced the monumental concrete forms in Europe's landscape on many journeys along the so-called ‘Atlantic Wall’ - from Germany to French Brittany and the English Channel, but above all along the Atlantic from Norway to the Spanish border.

In conversation with gallery owner Aeneas Bastian, the artist Andreas Mühe and the artistic director of Kunsthaus Dahlem, Dorothea Schöne, we want to explore the history of bunkers and concrete in their function, fiction, materiality and iconography.

Mühe takes the transformation of the bunker to the greatest possible extent: He reduces the monumental dimensions of the hard concrete architecture to a humanly tangible size and transforms them into small, soft objects - like cuddly toys that children play with. Instead of a singular monument, Mühe creates many small ‘fabric bunkers’, like a sea of bunkers that floods the exhibition space.

Mühe deliberately opts for a democratic, approachable, large quantity instead of a single, all-dominating monolith. The heavy, monumental materiality and impact of the bunker is replaced by the soft feel of the easily manageable miniature version. By counteracting this, the artist invites us to question and scrutinise bunkers - their architecture, effect and history.
