The Agony in the Garden (The Prayer of the Cup)

“The Prayer of the Cup” is a deeply contemplative sculptural work inspired by one of the most moving episodes in the Gospel narrative — the prayer of Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane on the eve of His Passion.

In this work, Oleksii Leonov explores the themes of spiritual trial, solitude, and the inner struggle a person faces when confronted with the inevitable. It is a moment when human nature meets the divine will, and anxiety and suffering give way to humility and acceptance of one’s destiny.

Chamotte lends the sculpture a distinctive expressive quality. Its natural texture, restrained plasticity, and tangible solidity emphasize the solemnity of the figure and its inner tension. The focus is not on an outward gesture, but on the spiritual state itself — the silence of prayer, the depth of suffering, and the steadfastness of faith.

“The Prayer of the Cup” is not merely an interpretation of a biblical scene, but also a meditation on human courage, sacrifice, and the ability to endure life’s most difficult trials. The work invites viewers into a personal experience of silence, faith, and hope.

Oleksii Leonov’s sculpture offers an artistic reflection on a moment when prayer becomes a source of spiritual strength, and humility emerges as an expression of the highest form of courage.
