LIGHT\TRACE No. 1 explores the poetic relationship between light, paper and surface. Transparent fibre optics are embedded within layers of delicate, handmade mulberry paper, tracing luminous lines across its translucent surface. Some lines appear sharply defined, while others dissolve softly into the material, creating a continuous interplay between clarity and diffusion. Each fibre optic is individually worked and positioned by hand so that light emerges selectively and with subtle variations in intensity. As the luminous lines overlap across the layered paper, they create an impression of depth and movement. The viewer’s gaze is drawn into the delicate network, discovering ever-changing relationships between the visible fibre optics and the light diffusing through the paper. The paper itself becomes an essential part of the sculpture. Made from mulberry bark, its exceptionally fine structure allows individual fibres to remain visible, giving the surface a tactile, organic quality. The fibre optics leave subtle contours within the paper, creating a delicate relief that can be perceived even when the work is not illuminated. A partially palladium finish adds another dimension to the work. Its precious metallic surface catches and reflects ambient daylight, allowing the sculpture to remain present even without artificial illumination. Light therefore exists within the work in different states: as a luminous trace, as a diffuse glow and as a reflection on the metallic surface. LIGHT\TRACE No. 1 is a quiet exploration of light as material. Its fragile paper structure, tactile surface and almost imperceptible shifts between light and shadow create a contemplative presence—an intimate field of light that reveals itself gradually through looking.
