Capsule designed and built by Christina Sporrong and Christian Ristow to answer the need for a collective catharsis during the Covid 19 pandemic.
Capsule is an organically inspired mechanical sculpture. During the first wave of the Pandemic, it was a vessel for the hopes and fears of the community. The community was invited to capture their thoughts on paper and insert the notes directly into the sculpture.
The hands were filled with firewood and the combusting notes kinetically set the sculpture into motion, causing it to open, exposing its inner core, and revealing a new dynamic shape.
Capsule remains in its unfolded shape and evokes hope and light, exposing the blue blown glass cones on the top of the sphere. It catches the daily light and is illuminated at night to act as a beacon, reminding us that there is growing light even in the darkest times.
