Astrakan

Before birth, the Karakul lamb (another fetus) has a lighter, soft coat with flat-lying curls. The fur of this fetus is obtained by killing the mother just before birth and cutting the lamb from the abdomen. Sometimes up to 15 days before natural birth. Because two animals are killed, both the lamb and the mother sheep, this fur is a lot more expensive. The lambs are also so small that up to 30 lambs have to be killed for 1 long fur coat. This fur is sold under names such as Astrakan, Karakulcha and Breitschwanz.
