Considered a solar deity the God Mithras was widely worshipped in the centuries leading up to and following the birth of Christianity. It is possibly that some of the rituals known to Mithras also influenced early Christian dogma.
The greatest similarity between these two ideologies remains aspects of the astrological calendar, as Mithras was born on the 25 day of December, and his principal ritual celebrations were observed on the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox; Christmas and Easter.
Further, it was believed that Mithras served as an arbitrator between the Gods and mortals and had twelve satellites, which are taken as the Sun's disciples.
Known as the light of the sun he was considered a benevolent god and bestowed health and sustenance upon his followers.
