The Figure
Adriana Marble
As in early work, this piece rejoices in the graceful and feminine spirit of the dancer and in many ways is a precursor to Blakeās later work, where he not only celebrates the female figure, but makes of her strength and beauty a central and unifying theme.
Dance was the principal theme on which the artist based his work in the beginning of his career. The idea of capturing the movement and expression of dance, combined with the beauty of the human form, was the objective of this as well as other sculptures. To achieve a three-dimensional representation of this idea was seen as the fusion of one art form into another, as āart within artā.
