Sculptures in which bees live have been around since the 17th century. The workshop for figurine hives has specialised in this folk art. I have been translating this fascinating tradition into the present day for over 30 years.
Beehives, as they adorn the public space today, are not only beautiful to look at and have the country and people of the neighbourhood as their theme, no, they also harbour life, that of the honeybees. They function as a kind of show hive and also cast a spell over viewers who are not usually interested in art;-))
How did people come to put bees in their stomachs? As a sculptor and bee carer, I have been on the trail of this question for 30 years. From the honey licker to the golden banana, all beehives with a history. Because they already existed in the 18th century. And it's about more than just extracting honey. It is also about more than housing bees, it is about the relationship between humans and bees, or bees and humans. Sculptures in public spaces tell a story. As a figurative beehive, i.e. a figurative hive, they allow the bees to have their say at second glance. A very special ART experience
