My recent diversification into nature casting is an extension of my passion for life casting. Dancing Bracken is a response to my walks in the woodland and moorland around my home in Yorkshire.
For Dancing Bracken, I noticed the way a single piece of grass can frame a whole landscape. In spring the bracken emerges from the dead undergrowth in small family groups facing one another, their leaves slowly unfurling like tiny baby's fists.
I bring the scene alive through metallic techniques, lacquesrs and foils. For Dancing Bracken I have experimented with rusting to colour the sculpture, combining terracotta cast with iron filings.
