31. ROHKUNSTBAU: The Art of Going Beyond

What is the new? And how does it come into being? The 31st ROHKUNSTBAU explores the possibilities and limits of transforming the existing. ‘The Art of Going Beyond’ is the theme of this year’s exhibition at Altdöbern Castle. The exhibition focuses on the perspective of those acting within a pre-structured order; in short: on the logic of transcending the given to achieve something new. In doing so, the 31st ROHKUNSTBAU will simultaneously fuel legitimate doubts as to whether everything that is new is necessarily better, thereby putting the modernist paradigm of progress to the test. For does change towards something new necessarily mean progress? Or is change perhaps simply, quite banally, the result of moving beyond to a different state? How, then, should this ‘other’ be assessed? And would it then be necessary for it to be new?

The exhibition explores a wide range of themes: 'The Art of Going Beyond'

- as a driving force for social change, in the sense of reshaping and restructuring existing structures and ways of thinking, 

- as a means of overcoming interpersonal boundaries and barriers through the creation of new interactive relationships and forms of cooperation, 

- as technological innovation with a view to a more sustainable and resilient society in times of climate crisis and war

- as a reflective critique in the field of digital transformation and the new experiential worlds of artificial intelligence

- as an artistic strategy for overcoming tradition and the boundaries of media.
