Never again – 3000 poppies on the Königsplatz
Never again – 3000 poppies on the Königsplatz
On November 11, one of the most spectacular art installations of this autumn will take place on Königsplatz in Munich. The action artist Walter Kuhn has more than 3000 hip-high poppies made of artificial silk set up on the four central green areas of the square, each with an area of approx. 1000 square metres, which will be on display there for three weeks.
He takes the end of the First World War 100 years ago on 11 November as the occasion for his installation, which he also understands as a call for peace. Up to now, the red poppies have been a symbol of commemoration of fallen soldiers, especially in English-speaking countries. The aesthetic intervention at this historically significant site is intended to substantially expand this aspect to become a symbol of remembrance of civilian victims of all wars and of worldwide reconciliation.
In a black box in front of the Glyptothek, texts on the themes of war, peace and resistance can be heard in a video projection, read by pupils of the nearby Anita Augsburg Vocational High School. The art action takes place within the framework of the Munich Peace Weeks and is part of the series "1918 | 2018 - What is Democracy? The patron of the event is Hans-Georg Küppers, Cultural Officer of the City of Munich.
