Gudrun Nielsen

Gudrun Nielsen Reykjavík-based sculptor has spent most of her artistic career working in the UK. She has competed and exhibited at an international level and been granted many different awards for her art. Gudrun has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions, e.g. Sweden, Germany and Italy.

Gudrun aligns herself with the kind of three-dimensional art which might be called a modernist-based formalism with minimalist or constructivist overtones. The ‘Japan factor’ should be seen in the context of the second aspect of Gudrun´s ‘style’, her enduring interest in clear and concise forms and proportions, and in qualities such as lightness and harmony, in short, everything that contributes to the optimum balance of elements within the work at hand as well as the environment without. These are qualities traditionally associated with the Japanese attitude to mass and space, as seen in the work of their most prominent architects. A fundamental aspect of this attitude is a certain spareness with regard to materials, which is also something that Gudrun subscribes to. Adalsteinn Ingolfsson.

The Barren wasteland series. It was in the summer of 2019 that I traced my father’s footsteps to the old trails of the barren wasteland west of Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland. We drove up to the Jökulheima cabin buildt 1955 at the foot of the glacier. It shocked me to find out that the glacier had retracted about 10 km and we could just get a glimpse of it in the distance from the cabin. In this area of barren wasteland, I took photographs without realising at the time what I would use them for. Soon after the trip I started to work on my photos and merged them with my dad’s old images taken up to 70 years apart in the area and on the glacier. I wanted to express with collage the known facts, that forces of nature are unpredictable and nowhere are the opposites as great as in this barren wasteland. Where the white glacier's edge has retreated and wide areas of black sand and wasteland appear. The Mountain Series 2014 – 2018 of recycled materials influenced Gudrun by working in her Reykjavík studio on the site of one of Iceland’s leading providers of environmental management services and clean energy. “Slow but constant changes in the immediate surroundings made the work happen naturally”, Gudrun stated.

Alice and the Cheshire Cat or Farewell to Wonderland
Alice, pale, innocent and distanced, has not only assigned her grin to the cat. She handed over her vitality exhaustively to the little cat-mummy, thereby creating an uncanny and Pygmalion-like inversion of what is dead and what is alive. A human and the beastly mode of existence. Fading away, her Victorian beauty reanimates the shrunken creature. As a cheshire cat it rises forever.

Siedlung

Amsterdam primordial soup
Commissioned by Bouwinvest, designed by Paul Whalen. In the center of Amsterdam. This "oldfashioned" passage depicts the history of water and our relationship to it. The floor is made from terazzo, the handglazed tiles in 15 shades going from green to brown are decorated with gold, the 3 triptychs gigantic mirrors are sandblasted and painted from the back, in the middle there is a bronze fishhead shaped fountain, there are specail chandeliers made of bicycle parts and to top it off the ceiling is made of glass mosaic.

An outcast sanctuary
Skatepark on Zeeburgereiland in Amsterdam, commissioned by the city of Amsterdam. 12 tile panels were printed with glaze after drawings were colored in with ballpoint to resemble delft blue. 135m1 of 2,5x2,5 tiles 8 high were put around the pools. Because the surfaces were scatered the park is considered as a giant organism with holes were you can see inside. Skaters were in the early eighties not very popular so in the drawings you'll find other outcast such as pigeons, woodlice and trash.

The Gold Rabbit ... He popped out, just like that, one day, from my hat: sitting still and attentive... One ear more or less tilted depending on the secret that one confides in him and the material in which he is made to appear : A body made of plexiglass, carbon, steel, or aluminium... Why not a Golden Rabbit or a Silver Rabbit ? ...A few sleights of hand... King Kong Balls in the garden
King Kong’s Balls, the Gaze of a King, the Royal Pause for the gallery... Millions of “Likes” as though in praise of: “Everyone can go fuck themselves”... Between Conceit and indifference, a certain idea of freedom cast in bronze... Sculpt and let the sculpture speak for itself... ... Those who will see nothing but its attributes will have seen nothing, understood nothing... A grand show to bug the ‘right-minded’... to deceive fools... A half-smile... ... The coarse illusion of an impudent Monkey... The taunt of Kong to set the art-fair “cheetahs’” tongues wagging, for all the masturbatory bonobos to cop complexes... His balls on the table like coconuts thrown in the faces of conformism... His balls out in the open to hide his butt that no one will ever see... ... The calm resistance of an untamed Monkey... His gaze is elsewhere... Far from the human menagerie, the losers, the unsightly, the dicks and the dickless... Far from this brash theatre, this crass comedy... ... The Kong has a dream... A paradise lost... With no cage and no master... A laugh that we cannot hear... His balls like a gong to summon the great feast...

APOLLO BELVEDERE (Pure White Marble / Edition of 1)
The Apollo of the Belvedere. My Years 1972-1974. Emancipation. ... A Gorgon’s curly mane... The Jim Morrison kind, sculpted with rollers, curls sealed with ammonia... The era’s canon of beauty, homemade-style. The first act of my emancipation... ... I was emerging from a childhood that hadn’t spared the rod… My desires cut short... My hair parted on the side... The front fold of my flannels neatly pressed... Not a word out of place... A stiff and starched, ordered childhood… My Self in the closet... My dreams hidden beneath my pillow... ... A pair of motorbikes rumbling across my nights... Hopper and Fonda’s choppers... A trail of dust... Easy Rider, full speed... Freedom sliding on the road... A pair of runaways opening the way for me ... America, the promised land of my Free Will... ..Music in the distance... Woodstock ‘69... Notes full of mud and fervour... Chords screaming with hope and crying out for liberation .... “Freedom, Freedom, Freedom”... Richie Havens’ improv as a personal message sent to me... “Got it”… ... In my mind, my escape plan... My secret to leave my chrysalid... “A long way from my home”... The immensity of the world before me... A swarm of Butterfly-Women on the horizon... ... Something was growing inside me, piercing beneath my skull, sprouting under my skin... Something dividing and rising... Something flowing out of me... I could feel myself becoming handsome; my wings sprouting... ... Hulk, Apollo, and Nietzsche: there was a bit of each in me... This “superhuman” feeling... Become what you are ... Freedom at age 18... The Door open at last... I was going to become what I am...

Saugetier
Saugetier is an original of the sculpture series “organic media sculptures” Broken electric appliances - the wired plastic debris of our technological civilization - are merging with organic waste material - the eternally renewing biomass of natural cycles. The inevitable digital screen of the 21st century is implanted in this indecipherable object trouve, the screen again is conquered by the moving image of the eternal flow of life’s basic substance- water, in all its formal variations, breathing in and out as the universal life force expanding and contracting. In the age of the Antropozen, man-made artefacts have irreversibly penetrated and started to mutilate the earth’s biospheres, while plastic waste, Elektrosmog and sewage are poisoning our natural world, nature starts to actively integrate the invasive materials in its eternal scheme of evolving life- new imaginary hybrid species emerge — with technological corses, digital hearts and organic skins…

Journey to inner self
Thesis Project for the "Master’s School of Art and Design" - section sculpturing A bronze statue is standing on the floor. 85 kilograms of chocolate are applied to the sculpture and formed into the shape of a bodybuilder. When the chocolate sculpture is finished, the chocolate is melted away, revealing the bronze statue. The chocolate, therefore, serves as a human shell that disconnects from its inner self through time and eventually falls away. My final presentation was presented with two projectors facing into opposite directions. On one was the build-up shown, on the other was the melting process, accompanied with interviews from people all over the world, talking in their own language about the topic "Globalisation" and what it means for them. The speech by the artist was provided in Spanish, English, and German, in order to emphasize and do justice to the multicultural togetherness of our time.

Hydratoaster
