Sweet Pass Sculpture Park Residency

Sweet Pass Sculpture Park announces the 2nd iteration of its education and exhibition program, Sweet Pass Sculpture School (SPSS). The program consists of a one-week intensive in Dallas, TX, a remote mentorship for research and project development, and a concluding exhibition at Sweet Pass Sculpture Park in the fall of 2024. Click here to learn more about our first cohort and their exhibition, Bottomland (2022).

Artists invited to participate will engage in site visits, lectures, screenings, readings, and dinners - meeting with local cultural producers, thinkers, and experts to collectively explore the city of Dallas. This program will conclude in a group exhibition at Sweet Pass Sculpture Park, emphasizing connection to the surrounding region, its communities, and environment. This program is free to participating artists, and a $1500 stipend will be presented to each artist to support their final projects.

2024 THEMATIC FOCUS: CONCRETE

This year's Sculpture School program examines the meaning and materiality of concrete, the planet's most widely used material. Our exploration will delve into the historical aspects of its production and usage, specifically in the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and examine its impact on the local. Participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with concrete through various demonstrations, experimenting with different techniques and methods. They will also contribute to creating a “common concrete” using materials from the park's grounds.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Applicants must be 21 or over.
• Prior experience in the visual arts, art history, or design is preferred.
• Participants who are currently enrolled in an education program are not eligible.
• Participants must be able to travel to Dallas, TX during the one-week intensive and installation and be open to actively engaging in group settings.
• Participants understand this program will involve outdoor activities in Texas during the summer and fall months when the weather is unpredictable and involves high temperatures.
• Housing will be provided, but artists will be responsible for their travel to Dallas.
• One daily meal will be provided artists will be responsible for other provisions.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

All materials are to be submitted to sweetpasssculpturepark@gmail.com through your choice of delivery (google drive, dropbox, wetransfer, etc.) All materials should be clearly labeled.

• Artist contact info on each page (Name, pronouns, email, address, website)
• Artist CV (No more than two pages)
• Artist Bio (max 300 words)
• Statement of interest in the program (max 500 words and/or 2-3 min video)
• 15 examples of past work (links to video and sound-based works are limited to 3 minutes total)
• Image List corresponding to image labels.

REVIEW PROCESS:

Artists will be selected for Sweet Pass Sculpture School by jury - based on a competitive, open application process. Completed applications must be submitted by the deadline (Feb 25, 2024 EOD - 11:59 pm). Artists will be selected based on the quality of their application materials, past experience, and clarity of vision in their statement of interest. Sweet Pass will select artists whose careers and creative practices would benefit from the format of this opportunity.

Following the jury's recommendations, Sweet Pass Sculpture Park staff will conduct individual interviews via Zoom in March and announce final decisions by March 31, 2024.
