Kunstraum Aarau

The Kunstraum Aarau association has been running an exhibition space since 1990 with the purpose of enabling events in the visual arts and their border areas, in particular conveying and supporting unestablished perspectives.

The association offers platforms for exhibitions and concerts on the ground floor with a shop window in the Ochsengässli and on the second floor with an exhibition room.

History and organization

At the beginning of 1990, a group of visual artists from the Aargau GSMBA area rented, a 100 m2 room in the KiFF ( culture in the feed factory ) at Tellistrasse 108 in Aarau and thus participated in the construction of this regional cultural center. The focus was on creating a forum with an open concept for events in the visual arts and their border areas. Unsecured vision should be in the foreground. The independent association Kunstraum Aarau was founded on 3. Founded in September 1990. The Aarau art space was at its first location on the outskirts of the city for 13 years, together with other comparable, non-commercial spaces and outside of institutions, an indispensable breeding ground for the current art discourse. Experiments,Experimental arrangements and presentations could be created here regardless of the claim of majority acceptance by public institutions and the commercial goals of private galleries and made available to an interested public.

In 2003, the board of the Aarau art space decided to rethink the location, concepts and content. In this context, the location in the KiFF, away from the exhibition space on the outskirts of the city, has been moved into the center of Aarau, which is occupied by passers-by, to Ochsengässli 7.

The Aarau art space is supported by the free work of the board group, consisting of artists and culturally committed people. The financial basis is formed by the contributions of the club members, the Aargau Board of Trustees and the city of Aarau. Individual projects are supported selectively by other people and institutions.
