Aargauer Kunsthaus

The Aargauer Kunsthaus is an open platform for Art in Switzerland. In constant exchange with our public, we create a space for intellectual and emotional experiences. The Aargauer Kunsthaus aims to provide an inspiring venue for discovery, exploration, dialogue and enjoyment. To this end we are committed with diligence and passion, respect and courage.

The Aargauer Kunsthaus is home to an exceptional collection of Swiss art. This is the foundation on which our exhibition and outreach programme is built. In monographic and thematic exhibitions with both domestic and international emphasis, the Aargauer Kunsthaus is dedicated not only to historical movements in art but also to modern artistic trends, focussing in particular on contemporary art and its relevance in society.

Our Collection

Our collection presentation exhibits classical and contemporary works from the in-house collection of the Aargauer Kunsthaus. Curated and refreshed regularly, this exhibit offers access to a rotating selection of works.

With over 20,000 works, the Aargauer Kunsthaus owns the most comprehensive public collection of art from Switzerland from the 18th century to the present.

Post-war abstract art and the new artistic departure of the 1960s are likewise covered. Important acquisitions of works by contemporary artists such as Ugo Rondinone, Thomas Hirschhorn and Mai-Thu Perret continue this collection tradition. Themed presentations of works from the collection and regularly reconfigured exhibitions of the museum's holdings allow for stimulating dialogues and keep opening up new perspectives.

Mediation

For twenty years now, the varied mediation programme has been aimed at schools, families, children, and youths, while offering barrierfree events for people with disabilities. Interactive guided tours of the exhibitions and the collection bring the works closer to participants, provide an opportunity to practise precise observation skills, and encourage the exchange of views. In addition, participants can try out their own creative realisations in the studio.

The mediation department develops workshops for school classes, which focus on particular themes related to the various exhibitions. Instructors and students benefit from advanced training courses in extracurricular teaching methods.

Art mediation aims to encourage us to think creatively, reflect on what we see, and expand our horizons.
