Labyrinth of the Future - subcutaneous
In the *Hoogkoor*—the exhibition space within the Academiehuis Grote Kerk in Zwolle—a labyrinthine environment unfolds, allowing visitors to move freely among these traces of life. Set within the monumental space of the Grote Kerk, the installation invites a dialogue about responsibility, memory, and how we deal with the legacy of an industry that has—fortunately—all but vanished from our streets, yet whose material remains are still among us.
Now that fur farming is banned in the Netherlands, thousands of old fur coats, stoles, and pelts remain. They turn up in thrift stores, disappear into waste containers, or end up in storage. What does it mean to discard these materials? And how do we relate to the animals that lived and died for them?
The work deliberately avoids taking a single, definitive stance. The installation does not seek to glorify fur; rather, it raises questions about how we engage with the remnants of a controversial past. Is destruction the only ethical response? Or can a work of art provide space for remembrance, acknowledgment, and reflection? Can it bring to light what remains hidden beneath the surface of our consumer culture?
