Dialogue in Vienna: The Agency of Matter

A Dialogue with Erik Tannhäuser in his Sculpture Garden

Upon entering the sculpture garden, we are greeted by Condé. The sculpture is named after the famous favorite riding horse of Frederick the Great. For the head and hooves, Erik Tannhäuser used Statuario Carrara marble. The body is made of copper.

Looking at the surrounding trees, we spot a life-size figure made of ash and bone glue. Further objects made of other materials stand in Tannhäuser’s open-air studio. Steel picture panels complete the ensemble and evoke associations with cave paintings.

Why this diversity of materials? Learn more about the agency of matter on 22 November 2026!

Erik Tannhäuser, born in 1974 in Altenburg (Thuringia), works in Berlin, Vienna and Paris. With his sculptures, installations and picture panels, he engages with socio-political issues, human rights, animal welfare and the environment.
