Atlass

A female version of Atlas! She can hold the weight of the world on her shoulders with ease.

The sculpture is inspired by a Mayan figurine holding a water pitcher that I saw in the Ethnological Museum, Berlin-Dahlem in 1990. I made a pen sketch in the museum, then a plasticine maquette while living in The Netherlands. After I returned home to Annandale in 1991, I made the clay model, then a plaster mould, and cast the sculpture in wax. This wax model was then used to make the master mould at the foundry.
