Joke L.C. van Beetem (1966) is a sculptor of natural stone. Her style is primarily geometric & abstract; her work crafted mainly from Italian marble. 

 Joke’s work is distinguished by straight lines, geometric forms, flat planes, mirroring, upside down perspectives & rotation of shapes.

 Her work is inspired by her interest for industrial design & geometry. She has been influenced by abstraction in art as well as constructivism and minimalism. 

 The creative process for Joke is a progression from firstly a draft on paper, or a scale model, of the future sculpture which she replicates in actual size from a massif marble block.

Joke’s approach embraces precision, order, structure, rationalism as well as simplicity rather than realism.  The essence of the sculpture is to be found within the sculpture itself.

 This manner of approach has allowed Joke to develop a geometric aesthetic language visible through artistic reliefs, contrasts, repetition & lines. 

 Joke divides her time between studios in Den Dolder, the Netherlands & Pietrasanta, Italy. 

My practice explores the relationship between geometry, space and material through the timeless language of stone. Working primarily in Italian marble, I create abstract sculptures that investigate balance, proportion and structural clarity. Rather than representing the visible world, my work seeks to reveal the underlying order that connects form, light and space.

Influenced by Constructivism, Minimalism and Concrete Art, I regard sculpture as an architectural presence rather than an isolated object. Every volume, plane and intersection is carefully considered to establish a dialogue between mass and void, precision and intuition, permanence and change. The sculptures are intended to be experienced through movement; as the viewer changes position, light continuously transforms the perception of the work.

Stone is central to my artistic thinking. Its geological history, permanence and resistance demand patience, discipline and absolute commitment. Every decision is irreversible. This slow and deliberate process is not merely a method of making, but a way of thinking. The material itself becomes an active collaborator, revealing subtle qualities that cannot be imposed but must be discovered.

I am drawn to reduction rather than complexity. By removing everything that is unnecessary, I search for forms that possess clarity, silence and timelessness. Geometry, in my work, is not an exercise in mathematics but a means of expressing harmony, tension and human perception. Precision becomes poetic; structure becomes emotion.

Architecture has long been an important source of inspiration. My sculptures do not imitate buildings; instead, they investigate the same fundamental principles that shape architecture: proportion, rhythm, balance and the relationship between object and environment. Installed in interior or exterior spaces, the works redefine their surroundings while simultaneously being transformed by them.

Ultimately, my sculptures invite contemplation. They offer no narrative and require no explanation. Instead, they encourage a direct encounter with form, material and space, allowing each viewer to experience a quiet dialogue between permanence and perception.
