INDENTATIONS OF MEMORY JANINE THÜNGEN-REICHENBACH | SCULPTURE

Dear Friends,

We are honoured to present Indentations of Memory, Janine Thüngen-Reichenbach's latest solo exhibition of sculpture in bronze and washi paper. On display at KALPA until August 2026, the exhibition heralds the beginning of our new art season. We invite you to wander through our historical Gallery venues, now housing a fresh and eclectic collection of artworks, and to immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of our ancient town in the heart of Tuscany, Volterra.

Is it possible to etch the memory of time? In the work of Janine Thüngen-Reichenbach, the fleeting echoes of passing years are impressed forever, creating a tangible continuum between the past and the future. Through the artist’s multidisciplinary practice, the concepts of motion and stillness are fused into a single art object, resulting from her research in scientific territories that explore spacetime and the void through the lenses of both physics and Eastern philosophy.

The title of her latest solo exhibition at KALPA, Indentations of Memory, finds its roots in the Medieval Latin indentāre, meaning "to furnish with teeth", emphasising the visceral, biting nature of time. This project, presenting an iconic washi paper work alongside a significant body of bronze sculptures - a material renowned for its durability and nobility - is deeply sensorial. It is an invitation to inhabit the penumbra of the room and engage with art forms that demand to be touched and felt. Her sculptures thus become physical thoughts in the act of transformation, accentuated by light reflected off elusive surfaces that lend them a haunting, impressionistic quality.
