Showell Park, Wolverhampton
Commissioned by Keepmoat Homes through a Wolverhampton Council percent for art scheme
A group of stainless steel and cast glass Spanner forms installed in the public open space of Showell Park Housing Development. It was previously the site of the Britool factory, where many local people used to work - these Spanner sculptures also reflect the current use of the site as a park with their morphing plant-like forms. Phil designed the Spnner form and Diane made the stailess steel reliefs and the reliefs for the cast glass blocks.
There was extensive community consultation over the subjects that we based the designs on. We offered the community three very different proposals based on several meetings, and a drop in day for people to tell us their feeling about the site and their ideas for it. The Spanners of Britool Bower gained the highest vote.
Materials - stainless steel, cast glass, height 5m
The Spanners were fabricated by Castle Fine Arts Foundry and they also arranged the casting of the stainless steel relief strips running down the centre of two of the sculptures. Jackson Fawkes Glass cast the glass inserts, made for the jaws of each Spanner.
