Sarah Pierce: Scene of the Myth
GfZK in collaboration with IMMA – Irish Museum of Modern Art, the John Hansard Gallery and European Kunsthalle presents Sarah Pierce: Scene of the Myth curated by Rike Frank.
Sarah Pierce has developed a concept she names “community of the exhibition“. She describes exhibitions as places where works of art and audiences form a community transcending generations, geographies and times. A large body of works relates to Pierce’s interest in the figure of the student, in particular the art student, and the tenuous relationship between teaching and learning, politics and art-making. Scene of the Myth at the GfZK – Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig is Sarah Pierce‘s first expansive solo exhibition in Germany. In eight installations, performances and video works, spanning twenty years of practice, she asks what it means to gather, reflect and act as a community. During the exhibition, the artist invites various performers and interlocutors to enter into a dialogue with the artworks. She understands the Scene of the Myth not as an actual location, but as an occasion where inherited and invented knowledges come into play.
On the following dates, performers will activate works in the exhibition:
Wed, 4–6 p.m., 31.1., 21.2., 28.2., 20.3., 27.3., 17.4., 24.4., 22.5.
