A Place to Dream and a Chance for Artists

The sculpture garden of the Domgalerie in Wiener Neustadt, Austria – a green oasis at the foot of the cathedral. On the Open Day in June, this hidden gem opens its doors so that visitors can enjoy outdoor sculpture. And it offers a unique opportunity for artists to exhibit their works there.

In the middle of Wiener Neustadt lies the Sculpture Garden with its 3000m² in peace and tranquility; the garden belongs to the Domgalerie, one of the most traditional galleries in Wiener Neustadt. By the way, the statutory city should not be confused with Austria’s capital Vienna 60 miles further north!  
On the same spot where the gallery exhibits paintings and sculptures today, a monastery had its seat 700 years ago, which was directly connected via a corridor to the cathedral of Wiener Neustadt that towers imposingly above the city centre. The Sculpture Garden lies in the shadow of the cathedral. In the warmer months of the year, an impressive collection of works by renowned contemporary sculptors can be admired here upon request. A rare opportunity!
However, once a year, always in summer, the Sculpture Garden opens its doors: this exclusive opportunity presents itself this year on 15 June. Starting at 1 p.m., the public is invited to the Open Day to enjoy fantastic works by artists from all over the world in the glorious sunshine amidst the greenery. Every year, on this special occasion, the gallery invites selected artists to exhibit their works alongside the works of influential artists such as Eduard Diem, NONOS and Tomasz Koclega. 

The Domgalerie specialises in contemporary, mainly figurative art, but does not leave behind lovers of more abstract works. In addition to contemporary Austrian artists, sculptors from Poland, Zimbabwe and Latvia have their place in the green paradise behind the cathedral. The only limit is: it must be weatherproof – even if the sun is usually shining here. “The work of art has to appeal to me and to the majority of my regular customers,” says Gabriella Kolesa, the operator of the cathedral gallery, about the selection of her works. Diversity is particularly important for her: “In order to offer a wide spectrum of different styles and directions, I choose many different artists”. Sculpture enthusiasts of all kinds get their money’s worth in the gallery’s historic interiors, where less robust materials such as glass and paper-mâché are also on display. “The history and tradition of the house with its beautiful vault underlines the atmosphere and flair of the gallery,” tells Gabriella Kolesa enthusiastically.
This year, artists from sculpture network will have the opportunity to exhibit their works in this special setting. The gallery invites artists from all over the world to submit an application and, if successful, to personally take part in the Open Day in the Sculpture Garden on 15 June. Not only the regular customers of the gallery, 2500 of whom will be invited, will be attending. The Landesausstellung in Wiener Neustadt (30 March – 10 November 2019), which takes place at the same time, promises additional public traffic and is already expected to attract large numbers of visitors.
