A “sculpture path” is planned in Pirna, a small town in Saxony.

The association “Skulpturen für Pirna e.V.” was founded to establish this trail. The project is very challenging, as various partners have to be brought together and different interests taken into account. The path project and the association were initiated by Christiane Stoebe.

Since April 23, 2026, the first four sculptures of the Sculpture Trail for Pirna have been installed in Pirna. The works by Michael Schoenholtz—“Viersätzig,” “Vier,” “Wachsen–Regen–Wachsen,” and “Für zwei Hände”—have been placed above the historic old town.

With this, the launch of the “Skulpturenweg” (Sculpture Trail) project has been successfully completed.

Sculpture Path – What is it all about? Sculptures will be erected along a path from the town's train station to the castle grounds of Sonnenstein Fortress. All sculptures should have a connection to the city of Pirna and its history. The sculpture path brings art into public spaces and makes it accessible to everyone.

Christiane Stoebe is not only the initiator of this project, she is also a sculptor herself and curator of an annual sculpture exhibition that takes place during the summer months – Pirnaer Skulpturensommer.

This year’s Sculpture Summer kicks off on May 10, 2026, in the bastions of Pirna-Sonnenstein Castle, Schlosshof 2–4.

As of March 2026, nine stone sculptures are awaiting installation or presentation along the Sculpture Trail and thus in the public spaces of the city of Pirna.

Four works by Prof. Michael Schoenholtz open the trail:

Viersätzig (Conch limestone, marble, and paint, 2010),
Vier (granite, 1997),
Wachsen-Regen-Wachsen (mussel limestone, 2018),
Für beide Hände (granite, 2009).

All works were donated to the city of Pirna in 2024 by the artist’s daughter, Hannah Schoenholtz, from the estate of the artist, who passed away in 2019.

Another artwork is the piece *Paar* by Knut Hüneke. He created the work in 2021. It is made of basalt and is in private ownership.

*Nathan the Wise*, a sandstone sculpture by Klaus Schwabe, is another work in the series. This piece is owned by the city of Pirna; it was donated by the Schwabe family in 2023.

The seventh figure on the trail is Peter Makolie’s work *Großer Schädel* (Large Skull) from 2014, made of granite. It is owned by the East German Savings Banks Foundation.

Also owned by the East German Savings Banks Foundation is the sandstone sculpture *…mit dem Tod* (With Death), created in 1999 by Marguerite Blume Cárdenas.

The artwork Skrčenec (Squat) by Jacub Goll, made of diorite in 2024, currently marks the end of the sculpture trail, though this does not mean that it is finished or even complete.

Our sculpture trail is set to be expanded and extended over the next 10 years. We look forward to these additions.

Start of the project „Skulpturenweg“!

Die ersten vier Skulpturen unseres Skulpturenweges für Pirna stehen nun an ihrem Platz.

Nachdem am Montag, dem 20. April, trotz strömenden Regens und eisiger Kälte die Fundamentlöcher gegraben und die Betonfundamente gegossen werden konnten, wurden die Skulpturen von Prof. Michael Schoenholtz am Donnerstag, dem 23. April 2026, schließlich oberhalb der Altstadt von Pirna aufgestellt.

Damit ist der Start unseres Projekts „Skulpturenweg“ erfolgreich abgeschlossen. Vielen Dank an alle Beteiligten!

The first four sculptures of our Sculpture Trail for Pirna are now in place!

After digging the foundation holes on Monday, April 20, and pouring the concrete footings despite terrible rain and freezing cold, the sculptures by Prof. Michael Schoenholtz were finally installed above the old town of Pirna on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

With this, the launch of our “Skulpturenweg” (Sculpture Trail) project has been successfully completed. Many thanks to everyone involved!
