Evolution: A Coded Transformation of the Image
(The Calves in Me Dream of a Rapeseed Field)
2017–2021, metal, plexiglass, fur, QR code motifs; photo of a
rapeseed field and its digital image code
The object Evolution: A Coded Transformation of the Image
(The Calves in Me Dream of a Rapeseed Field) is a constructive
“head”, with laser-cut QR code motifs for the silhouettes.
The object is complemented by a small-format photograph
of a yellow rapeseed field hanging nearby. The two
sides of the object are different: instead of a “face”, there is
a “screen”, a digital image code of a rapeseed field carved
on a plastic plate (the entire image code consists of almost
100 A4 sheets). On the back of the head (which also
contains the parts of the brain responsible for subconscious
activity), there are fragments of a natural cow's fur – a
natural element in the whole structure made by digital means
and laser cutting.
The narrative of the work weaves together different motifs.
On the one hand, it is the intersection of nature and digital
technology: a digital photograph of a field of bright yellow
rapeseed is already an illusion of pixels on a screen. On the
other hand, this bright yellow beauty is one of the most lucrative
agricultural crops in demand on international markets,
but ecologically it is a wasteland, a “Sahara” where
neither birds nor insects can breed. Wild ungulates are also
poisoned by rapeseed. The beauty of the yellow fields thus
masks a sharp conflict between economic benefits and the
natural balance and the preservation of species.
