BIRCHES & LIGHT
BIRCHES & LIGHT transforms a space into an immersive landscape of light, exploring the relationship between nature, fragility and the immaterial qualities of light.
Fine fibre optics permeate delicate structures made from white filament yarn. Supported by transparent mesh structures, the fibres begin to glow with subtle variations in intensity. Light travels through the material and emerges unexpectedly, creating floating, almost organic forms within the space. The luminous structures appear like fragile beings—somewhere between natural growth and constructed form.
Real birch trunks and leaves become integral elements of the installation. They support and structure the luminous forms while introducing an unmistakably organic presence. Their verticality creates a spatial rhythm, while the delicate light structures seem to grow between and around them. The installation develops as a choreography between natural material and precise technological intervention.
The result is neither a representation of a forest nor simply an arrangement of illuminated objects. Instead, the space itself becomes a forest of light—an environment in which boundaries between nature, material and technology begin to dissolve.
Subtle variations in the intensity of the fibre optics create a sense of movement and life. Combined with the natural sounds accompanying the installation, the work invites the viewer into a slower, more contemplative experience. Light is not merely illuminating the space; it becomes something that can be encountered almost physically.
At the heart of BIRCHES & LIGHT is an exploration of light as both physical phenomenon and artistic material. Light is intangible, yet it shapes our perception of matter, space and atmosphere. It emerges from within the woven structures, moves through them and transforms the surrounding environment.
BIRCHES & LIGHT ultimately creates a space between the tangible and the immaterial—a poetic encounter between organic nature and technological precision, where light becomes a living presence and the space itself becomes part of the artwork.
