Louis le Roy, Sara Vrugt: Re-nature

Be part of an insightful event to explore two visionary artists from different generations — Louis Le Roy and Sara Vrugt — who each promote cooperation with nature through their community art.

“With his concept of the eco-cathedral, Louis G. le Roy (1924-2012, NL) was ahead of his time,
” declares Piet Vollaard, a Dutch architect and initiator of nature-inclusive design and urban nature. Beginning in 1966 as a land art project near Mildam in the Netherlands, it became a 21st-century touchstone for rethinking the relationship between humanity and nature.

Louis G. le Roy, a visual artist and landscape architect, was called the "wild gardener." By freely stacking used tiles, cobblestones, and bricks into walls or towers, he left it to nature to complete his work. Like cathedrals of the past, the completion of an eco-cathedral takes hundreds of years.

In times of climate emergency, Sara Vrugt (1983, NL) succeeded in planting as many as 100,000 trees! For 100,000 Trees and a Threaded Forest (2020), over the course of one year, more than 1,000 volunteers embroidered trees, leaves, and birds onto 100 square meters of cloth.

With donations from participants, 100,000 new trees were planted by TreeSisters. The embroidery also incorporates tree seeds. When the artwork is buried in a few years, the seeds will sprout.

“I am worried about nature and the generations after us. With this project, we jointly created a work of art and a new, living forest. I hope to inspire people. Everyone can do something.”
