Eija Liisa Ahtila. Sculpture in the age of posthumanism

The works of the Finnish artist and filmmaker Eija-Liisa Ahtila tell of interpersonal relationships, exceptional emotional circumstances, sexuality, psychoses and our relationship with nature. In her most recent works she examines theories of posthumanism and questions familiar notions of what it means to be human. In “Studies on the Ecology of Drama”, for example, she has actors slip into the roles of animals and plants. Ahtila works to expand the potential of human senses in order to create a sensitivity for other forms of life and a new understanding of the coexistence of the animate and inanimate world around us. This exhibition will offer a representative insight into Ahtila’s oeuvre, from her early monitor installations to multi-projection spaces, films and drawings to her current sculptural media installations.
