Outi Pieski: Eatnamastit

Malmö Art Museum presents the most extensive exhibition in Sweden to date with the acclaimed Sami artist Outi Pieski.

Through painting, textiles, video and large-scale installations, Outi Pieskis raises themes such as indigenous peoples' rights and sustainable development. Her work has roots in the Sami craft tradition, duodji, and conveys a strong connection to Sami culture and identity, where the relationship to nature and historical stories are central. Duodji is about crafting and creating, often as part of a collective community. With her art, Pieski gives voice to Sami perspectives and to what is in danger of being lost.

By working with traditional Sami materials and techniques, such as embroidery, weaving and tanning, while introducing new ideas and methods, Pieski contributes to both preserving and developing Sami art and culture for the future. Her practice balances life and environment and unites spirituality with the knowledge of her ancestors. She is an artist who not only looks back to understand her own history, but also uses art as a means of liberation from colonial and patriarchal rule. In some works, for example, she seeks redress for the colonial prohibitions that have historically affected the Sami minority.
The exhibition at Malmö Art Museum shows around fifty works that provide a comprehensive picture of Pieski's artistry.

Outi Pieski was born in 1973 and lives in Ohcejohka/Utsjoki, Finland.
