CENTRE INTERNATIONAL D’ART ET DU PAYSAGE

The Centre International d’Art et du Paysage (CIAPV) on Vassivière Island, France, supports research, experimentation, production and dissemination of contemporary art. Unique within the French artistic landscape, the CIAPV is celebrated for its remarkable contemporary architecture designed by Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre, its open-air permanent collection, and its program of exhibitions, residencies, publications and events exploring art and landscape. Situated on the Plateau de Millevaches in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the CIAPV is firmly rooted in its rural context while forging links nationally and internationally. Artists are invited to create and present works in direct relationship with the territory while questioning broader contemporary social, political and environmental concerns.

RESIDENCIES

CIAPV residencies support research, exchange and production for French and international artists and researchers. Through stays of one to four months, residents are offered an immersion in the landscape, history and culture of Vassivière Island and its surrounding region.

A privileged site for artistic experimentation and exploration, residencies constitute an anchor point and a driving force of CIAPV programs.

Residency participants are selected by invitation and through regular thematic calls for applications. Residents are offered accommodations and studio space in the Château on Vassivière Island, and are provided with a stipend and access to a vehicle. Participants are invited during their residency to present a talk, performance, workshop, or other form of public engagement in relation to their practice or field of inquiry.

RESIDENCY ARRANGEMENTS

Each resident is accommodated in a fully equipped apartment in the castle building on the island of Vassivière, refurbished by the architects Berger&Berger and BuildingBuilding in 2012. There are three different apartments with double beds, one of which can accommodate a family (family apartment: 67.9 m2, studio apartments 1 and 2: 30 m2 and 28.2 m2). Each apartment includes a fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom/toilet. Sheets, towels and kitchen utensils are provided. The apartments are heated geothermally. A communal utility room allows the residents to do their own laundry on the spot.

The residents share the open plan work areas spread over 192 m2 on several floors in the castle building, which are heated and equipped with an internet connection and telephone line. Designed by the architects more as a space for research and inspiration than as a practical working studio, the work space is not provided with audio visual or technical equipment; the residents are supported in personal, technical and material matters by the team at the CIAPV.

SCULPTURE WOOD

Works in space and time

Encompassing around sixty works, the Sculpture Wood reflects the evolution of major movements in contemporary sculpture. Monumental and discrete works – both permanent and temporary – are installed throughout the forest, in fields and along the shoreline, and can be discovered on foot and according to the seasons. Founded in 1983, the Sculpture Wood represents 40 years of open-air artistic commissions. It is free and open to all year-round.
