Wood Wedding, 2020, installation
pyrography on wood sculptures, embroidery on textiles, performance on opening night
A wood wedding is the fifth anniversary of a couple’s wedding. The work offers a documentary take on the everyday life of a five-year-old Bulgarian family, recreating motives from the power dynamics between the sexes in a relationship shaped by its time and place - Bulgaria between patriarchal tradition and feminism.
A stylized interior with two “frozen” live models presents the life of a young family as a fragmented documentary narrative, using a real couple's apartment interior and their conversations as foundation. A repetitive everyday life, a shaky power balance and countless big and small worries transpire on hard and soft surfaces via embroidery and pyrography.
