Field of Snails

The work speculates concerning the loss of biodiversity in grain and grassland farming and it’s effect upon nature in the countryside. Much of the old grasslands, which were species rich, have been lost to the production of short-term grass leys and the production of silage. This loss of old grass meadows with its abundant variety of plant species to fields planted with fast growing rye-grass swards now contains fewer creatures than other forms of farming. The same story applies to grain production with winter sowings and the use of chemicals and modern self-propelled combine harvesters. Considering this background the work explores seed like sculptural forms and what might be inside of the seed s from grasses to grains.
