In Family at Sea an old family photo is central. It is an image of Sjeng Beurskens, my grandfather’s brother, during his crossing from the Netherlands to America with the Holland Amerika Lijn. On 6 December 1949 he departed together with his wife Jet and their two sons on the steamer ‘Niew Amsterdam’.
The photo has inspired several works, a three-dimensional work, a video, silhouette cutouts, etc.
